Animal Haven FAQ's
1) What is Animal Haven? Animal
Haven is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats
and dogs throughout the Tri-State area, and provides behavior
intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption. Founded in
1967, we operate an adoption center in Manhattan and mobile adoption
van. We also provide programs that enhance the bond between animals and
people.
Animal Haven is a 501 (c) 3 organization.
2) Where is Animal Haven located?
We are located at 251 Centre Street, New York, NY (Between Broome and Grand)
3) What are the closest subways? You may take the 4, 5, or 6 to SPRING Street, the N, R, Q, W to CANAL or the B, D, F, M to Broadway-Lafayette. For detailed directions from your home to Animal Haven, please visit hopstop.com.
4) What are your hours? Noon to
7:00pm, Monday-Friday
11am to 6pm, Weekends If you are coming to meet animals
for adoption, you must arrive at least an hour before closing.
5) What is your adoption process?
When you meet an animal you like, you will
fill out an APPLICATION. We ask for a personal reference, (this
can be a family member, friend, employer) that can attest to
your ability to care for a pet. If you rent, we ask for your building information to make sure you are allowed
to have cats or dogs in your apartment. This information can be in the form of
a lease, the phone number of a leasing office, landlord, super or property
website. If you currently have a pet, we
ask for your vet’s information.
If you are looking to adopt a dog, we ask that all members of the household be
present to meet the dog (or will be able to come down to meet the dog at some
point). This includes other dogs in the household. We
want the dogs’ first meeting to be in the safety of the shelter with our staff
present.
Cat adoptions are usually same day. Dogs may take a few days.
6) Are there fees to adopt?
Yes. Adoption Fees are:
- $150 per cat
- $175 per kitten or $250 per pair
- $250 per dog (includes collar and leash)
- Puppies under the age of 1 year are $350.
Fee covers spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchip.
7)
How do I volunteer?
Please visit the volunteer section of our website.
8) How do I relinquish a dog or cat? Please visit the Contact Us section of our website to send a message to our Intake Department.
9)
Do you take donations of sheets, blankets, bowls, food, etc?
Yes we do. The only things we cannot use are open bags of food,
open/expired medication, pillows, large comforters or anything with down
filing. We also DO NOT USE PET STROLLERS. Anything else you’d like to donate
you many bring in during any of our shelter hours. Another great way to donate
much needed supplies is though our Amazon.com
wish list.
10) Is Animal Haven a "no-kill" shelter? Animal
Haven will never euthanize for space or time. Adoptable animals will stay in our care for as long as it
takes to get them adopted or placed in a more suitable rescue or foster
situation.
11) Can I bring students to Animal Haven for a school trip?
Due to the fact that we are such a small shelter with limited time and
resources, we ask school groups to make a tax-deductible donation of $100 (or the equivalent in supplies). If you would like to organize a school trip, please Contact Us to set-up a visit.
If you have a question that is not addressed here, please Contact Us for me information.
